While burning a CD, can I use a different USB device that's connected to the PC?

We recommend you use only the mouse and keyboard while burning a CD.

BIOS does not detect my CD-R, but Windows95 and Windows98 do. What do I need to correct this?

Please refer to your system user manual.  Check the CMOS configuration page and verify the CD-R or CD-ROM is properly configured.

Do not have any DOS drivers loading the CD-R or CD-ROM.  Do not have bus mastering or Ultra DMA on the CD-R port.   Check for any possible conflicts in the Device Manager.

I’ve loaded the Mitsumi DOS drivers and Windows 95 is not detecting the CD-R drive. What is the problem?

Mitsumi IDE CD-R drives are supported under Windows 95. Please check the following configuration. Choose the one that applies to your system.

CONFIGURATION 1: CD-R is connected to the Primary Port.

IDE CD-R drive is daisy-chained with your IDE hard drive by sharing an IDE cable      (40 pins) and connected to the Primary IDE port.

1.  Hardware conflict (Assuming Disk Inspector fails to detect the CD-R drive)

Advice: Please refer to your owner's manual. Set the hard drive as the master device, CD-R drive as the slave device.

2.  IDE device conflict.   Windows 95 may have difficulty detecting both IDE hard drive and ATAPI IDE CD-R drive on the same IDE port. (Assuming Disk Inspector detects the CD-R drive)

Advice: Connect the hard drive to the Primary port (set drive jumper to master) and using a separate IDE cable, connect the IDE CD-R drive to Secondary port (set drive jumper to slave).

CONFIGURATION 2: CD-R drive is connected to the secondary IDE port

1.  CD-R drive is the only device on the secondary port.

Advice:  Verify CD-R drive's jumper setting. CD-R drive has to be set to master port.

2.  CD-R drive is daisy-chained with another IDE device by sharing an IDE cable (40 pins) and connected to the secondary IDE port.

Advice: Verify both IDE device jumper settings.  One device needs to be on master port, the other takes the slave port.

3.  IDE device conflict.   Windows 95 may have difficulty detecting both IDE devices on the same IDE port (CD-R drive and another IDE device).  Assuming Disk Inspector detects the CD-R drive.

Advice:  Reconfigure your IDE devices so the CD-R drive is the only device on the secondary IDE port with a Master jumper setting.  Move the second IDE device from the secondary port to the primary port.  Daisy-chain the two IDE devices on the Primary port.  Set the hard drive to Master port and the other as Slave.  This allows the CD-R drive to be the only device on the secondary IDE port.

Is there a compatibility problem with the CR-2801TE and Windows 98?

Do not have any DOS drivers loading the CD-R or CD-ROM.  Do not have any bus mastering or Ultra DMA active on the CD-R port.  Check for any possible conflicts in the Device Manager.

Where do I find Windows NT 4.0 drivers for CR-2600TE?

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 has a built-in generic driver for ATAPI IDE devices.  The driver is supported by Microsoft, not by Mitsumi.  All Mitsumi IDE drives including: FX001DE, FX400, FX600, FX800, FX1200, FX1600, FX240, FX320, CR2600TE and CR2801TE and CR2600TE are supported by Windows NT 4.0. If your CD-R drive is still not detected by Windows NT, please verify your drive's hardware configuration.

Can I run my Mitsumi CD-R under Win 3.11?

No. The writing software that allows the CD-R drive to write can only be used in Windows 95, Window 98, and Window NT.   You can use the CD-R as a reader in Windows 3.1 but not as a writer.

Where do I find the CD-R driver for Windows98?

Mitsumi CD-Rs are plug and play in Windows 98. Windows 98 will detect the CD-R drive automatically.   To install, Add New Hardware and let Windows search for the CD-R. You do not need to use DOS drivers.

What is the proper Windows98 installation of the Mitsumi CD-R?

See the Quick Reference Guide included with your CD-R drive.

Does Mitsumi have drivers available to support Linux?

Mitsumi currently does not support the Linux operating system.

Yes.  The Mitsumi CR-4801TE and later models support DAO.  Mitsumi CR-2600TE and CR-2801TE do not support DAO.  Most CD recording software programs do not recognize this feature.  Adaptec Easy CD Creator does not support DAO. CeQuadrat WinOn CD 3.6 supports DA0.

Which writing methods do Mitsumi CD-R drives support?

Mitsumi CD-R drives CR-4801TE support Track at Once, Disk at Once and Multi-session.  Mitsumi CD-R drives CR-2600TE and CR-2801TE support Track at Once and Multi-Session.

How do I set up my CD-R to read Hewlett Packard CD-R discs?

Mitsumi drives have previously encountered difficulties reading CD-R discs written from Hewlett Packard CD-R drives. Hewlett Packard has developed a firmware upgrade to correct this problem. This upgrade can be obtained from the Hewlett Packard website: http://www.hp.com/isgsupport/cdr/70index.html.

What should I do when my computer crashes in the middle of recording a CD?

Make sure the CD-R is listed in Device Manger with no conflicts. Do not have any DOS drivers loading for the CD-R or any CD-ROM.  Do not have anything running in the background.

Why does my Mitsumi CR-2801TE CD-R drive, makes a noise in succession when the computer first fires up. Is this harmful to the drive?

It is normal for the CD-R to make some noise. As long as the CD-R is reading and writing you shouldn't be too concerned with the noise.

Is there diagnostic software available to test the CD-R?

TO TEST YOUR MITSUMI CD-R DRIVE (For CR-2600TE, CR-2801TE and CR-4801TE)

DICDR.EXE DIRECTIONS

Disc Inspector is a program that tests the CD-R drive.

Disc Inspector is a program that tests the CD-R drive. Use the floppy diskette that came with your drive for DOS driver installation and drive testing. Disc Inspector (DICDR.EXE) must run from DOS, not DOS Windows. Be sure to reboot the system to DOS before proceeding.

1. If running Windows 95, restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. Select "Start", select "Shut Down..." and select "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode".

2. Insert the supplied installation disk into drive A (or B). Be sure the write protect notch is in WRITE ENABLED (CLOSED) position. Disc Inspector will write a log file to the current logged directory. You may copy all files from the installation disk to your hard disk subdirectory, such as C:\DICDR, so that Disc Inspector is available for future use.

3. From the DOS prompt, type A: (or B:) and press ENTER.

4. Type DICDR and press ENTER.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

6. Hit the enter key to start analyzing the system’s hardware.

7. From the Drive menu choose Run Tests.

8. Using the left and right arrow keys, choose CD-R

9. You should see a description of the CD-R model number, port address, IRQ, drive jumper designation, and firmware version. If you do not see any CD-R drive, power off the computer and check the power and 40-pin cable connections.

10. To run a test, hold the Alt key and hit the highlighted letter. (Alt-M for Loading mechanism/Interface, Alt-A for Audio, Alt-D for Data/Media, and Alt-R for CD-R)

11. You will see a passed or failed message after the test is done. Passing these tests will verify that the drive is working properly. If any of the tests fail, refer to the troubleshooting section for help.

12. Hit the Esc key to exit the testing section.

To install the DOS drivers (required only if using your CD-R under DOS)—Skip to 15 if not installing drivers:

13. From the Install menu hit the enter key.

14. Follow the instructions on screen using the driver default settings.

15. When the installation is complete, remove the floppy diskette and POWER OFF the computer.

16. Power on the computer and reboot the system.

Disc Inspector Problems

CD-R Troubleshooting tips:

If the CD-R drive in the CR series was not detected when your system was analyzed by the Disc Inspector, you have an IDE configuration problem.

1. Find out where the CD-R drive 40pin cable connects (what card?) 2. Use this web site to solve the problem.

Make sure you are using a blank CD-R disc for the CD-R test. This will perform a Non Destructive Writing Test. The blank disc will still be able to be used for recording.

Only Mechanical and Interface test failed:

This is a hardware issue and will cause the other tests to fail.

Only the Audio test failed:

This is probably a hardware issue.

Only the Media test failed: This may be hardware or software related.

Only the CD-R Calibration/Write test failed:

**NOTE**The Data & Audio Test can not be ran with burnt CD's. These two tests need to be ran with manufactured CD's.

If you have additional questions after following the above instructions, please call technical support at 1-800-648-7864.

When I try to make the disc ISO compatible, I get an error that says, "Illegal SCSI request". All of my hardware is IDE. What is the problem, and what is the solution?

You need to disable bus mastering if you have it on your system. This is a known problem with IDE recorders. To find out if you have it and how to get rid of it, you will need to contact the maker of the computer. You should not have anything running in the background when you are writing to a CD. You should press Ctrl Alt Delete and end task on everything except Explorer, systray, and the writing software. Make sure you don't have any lines in the config.sys or the autoexec.bat that refer to a CD-ROM. Try using one of the three recommended brands of media. They are TDK, Kodak, and Taiyo Yuden.

I would like to have a little more explanations over the last firmware upgrade for my CDR. I have a CR-2600TE, may I use the CR-2801TE firmware upgrade?

No, you can not use the same firmware upgrade for both models.

Where do I find previous versions of the CD-R firmware?

Unfortunately, there is no way to go back to an old firmware revision without a serious chance of causing damage to the firmware on the drive. Previous versions are not routinely made available. Please contact technical support for further assistance.

How come my CR-2801TE drive will not recognize 700MB/80 minute CD's?

All Mitsumi CD-R/RW drives supports 80 min CD-R media with the latest firmware uprade.  Please refer to the Drivers and Manual section of Mitsumi.Com.

When I try to run ANY version of DirectCD in this computer, it locks up when it starts to load into the taskbar. What do I need?

Make sure you don't have any lines in the config.sys or the autoexec.bat that refer to a CD-ROM. If you want you can email me copies of these files and I will tell you what needs to be removed. Also, on some systems Direct CD can cause the system to slow down. This is because packet writing is always checking the drive. It is always running in the background. Just to factor some things out, I would uninstall Direct CD and leave only Easy CD Creator on the system. Then see if the performance is any better. Try using one of the three recommended brands of media as well. They are TDK, Kodak, and Taiyo Yuden.

CD-R/RW Drives Recording Errors

Can I record Karaoke CDs on any of the Mitsumi CD-RW Drives?

No. Mitsumi CD-RW Drives do not support Karaoke disc recording.

What are buffer underruns?

Buffer Underrun Trouble-shooting

GRI:Write Blocks failed, Invalid field in CDB, Block xxxxxx GRI:Write Blocks failed: write error.

**The above message = Buffer underrun**

CD writing is a real-time process which must run constantly at the selected recording speed, without interruptions. The CD recorder's buffer is constantly filled with a reserve of data waiting to be written, so that small slowdowns or interruptions in the flow of data from the computer do not interrupt writing.

A buffer underrun error means that for some reason the flow of data from hard disk to CD recorder was interrupted long enough for the CD recorder's buffer to be emptied, and writing was halted. If this occurs during an actual write operation rather than a test, your recordable disc may be ruined.

Possible Causes of Buffer Underruns

Hard Disk

  • "Dumb" thermal recalibration.
  • Fragmented hard drive.
  • Sector size at 32kb instead of 16kb. (Write from a hard disk partition no larger than 1gigabyte.)
  • Not enough space in temporary directory.
  • Hard disk compression may cause buffer underruns. We do not recommend writing from a compressed hard disk or disk partition.

Hardware

  • Slow source devices.
  • Source devices that transfer data in bursts. Incorrect recorder controller settings. Inability of the devices to sync properly. Overall system configuration.
  • Computer unable to allow fast enough data transfer.
  • Conflicts with old device drivers. Do not use 16-bit (real-mode) device drivers in Windows 95 or Windows NT. REM out any old CD-ROM drives you may have in your CONFIG.SYS file. (You don't need them anyway.)

Memory-Resident Programs

  • Any program that may activate on its own Anti-virus software
  • Screen savers
  • System agents
  • Schedulers
  • TSR (terminate and stay resident) software Networks
  • System sounds
  • Animated icons

Networks

  • Recording across the network (usually too slow to maintain adequate throughput speed).
  • Incoming e-mail or faxes.
  • Other people accessing your computer.

Windows 95

  • Modify Virtual Memory Settings.
  • Disable Auto Insert Notification.
  • If you have more than 16 MB of RAM, change the hard drive's Typical Role to Network Server.

Files to Be Recorded

  • Recording many small files.
  • Damaged source files (data loss).
  • Trying to record files in use by the system or other applications.

Other

  • Copying from or writing to a CD that is scratched, dirty, or damaged.
  • Recorder malfunction.

Checks / Prevention

Disable or remove everything in the computer EXCEPT the operating system, the recording software, and the drivers for your source devices. Defragment your hard drives at least once a week.

Do not record across a network. Copy the desired files to your local hard drive.

Log out of any networks if possible, including Windows for Workgroups and/or Microsoft Network.

Make sure your hard drive does Smart Thermal Recalibration. (That is, it won't recalibrate if the CPU is being used). Record at a slower speed.

Write an .ISO image to hard disk first, if you have enough space. Always write audio at 1x.

Keep the CDs, the recorder, and your source CD-ROM drive free of dust.

Make sure your SCSI controller card is FULLY ASPI-compliant.

Do not try to copy empty directories, zero byte files, or files that may be in use by the system at the time of recording.

More than 10,000 very small files should be written to an .ISO image first or recorded at 1x speed.

The temporary directory should always have space free at least twice the size of the largest file you are recording.

The entire computer, from the motherboard bus to the recorder itself, needs to be configured properly for faster recording and highest maximum sync transfer rate.

Change the DMA transfer rate for the card being used.

With DOS 6.22 or below and a source hard disk 1 gigabyte or larger, partitions should be kept smaller than one gigabyte so that hard disk sector size is 16kb instead of 32kb.

Try a different hard disk and /or gold recordable disc.

Windows 95 Settings

Virtual Memory (if you have more than 16 MB of RAM)

1.Right click on My Computer.

2.Select the Performance tab.

3.Click on the Virtual Memory button.

If you have:

8-bit color, select 16MBs for both the minimum and maximum size 16-bit color, select 16MBs for both the minimum and maximum size 24-bit color, select 32 MBs for both the minimum and maximum size 32-bit color, select 32 MBs for both the minimum and maximum size

Hard Drive Typical Role (if you have more than 16 MB of RAM)

1.Right click on My Computer, click on Properties 2.Select the Performance tab.

3.Click on the File System button.

4.Choose the Hard Disk tab.

5.Change "Typical Role of this machine" to Network Server. This re-prioritizes the hard drive so that it is given priority over other hardware and software functions

Turning Off Auto Insert Notification

Note: You should do this for every CD unit on your SCSI bus, including the CD recorder itself!

If your recorder is not recognized by Windows 95, and you are using Easy-CD Pro, you can download a driver to make your CD Recorder work as a multisession CD-ROM reader under Windows 95. Note, this driver will NOT install unless it detects Easy-CD Pro 95 installed on your system. It does not work under Windows NT.

1.Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.

2.Select Properties from the menu. The System Properties dialog box opens.

3.Click the Device Manager tab.

4.Click the plus sign next to the CD-ROM icon until you see the name of your CD drive. Select it.

5.Click on the Properties button. The Properties dialog box for your CD drive will open.

6.Click on the Settings tab.

7.Deselect "Auto insert notification."

8.Restart your system as prompted.

What do I do if I continue to get buffer underruns?

If you are getting buffer under runs, these errors are hardly ever an actual problem with the CD-R drive. They occur because information is not getting to the CD-R fast enough. You should not have anything running in the background when you are writing to a CD. You should press Ctrl Alt Delete and end task on everything except Explorer, systray, and the writing software. If you are copying from one CD-ROM to another then you need to make sure that it is transferring data and audio fast enough. You can go into Easy CD Creator and click on Tools and then System tests. Run the tests on the CD-ROM and hard drive. They should be transferring at about 800 kb/sec to be able to write at 2x with no problems. The small file rate for the data transfer is the one to look at because most files are under 6 MB in size. If you are trying to copy a large amount of data then you need to have as much free space on your C drive as you are trying to write. The ideal thing to do is if you have another hard drive or another partition that has over 650 MB free, go into Creator and pick Tools and Options and change the temporary folder from C:\Windows\Temp to the other drive.

Do Mitsumi CD-R drives support DAO (Disc At Once) writing process?

Currently Mitsumi CD-R drives CR-4801TE with firmware version 2.01 or later support DAO.

CD-R drives CR-2600TE and CR-2801TE do not support DAO.

Why do I get errors when I’m trying to burn CDs other than audio or data?

The drive should be able to write just about anything that you can put on the hard drive. The software limits what file types can be written.

Why does my CD-RW always has error with Adaptec software?

The error happens when the ASPI Layer fails.  Download ASPICHK Utility on Adaptec's website and run the program.

I tried creating an image(*.iso) with Adaptec Easy CD Creator Deluxe 3.0 already patched with the drivers for my Mitsumi CD-R, it creates the *.iso file without any problem, but when i want to burn it later on...the program crashes in preparation to write the track, but it burns other *.iso files created by another person without any problem. What am I doing wrong?

You need to upgrade your software to the latest version. This upgrade can be found at:

http://www.adaptec.com/products/overview/cdrgrid.html

You can also download the manual for Easy CD Creator at:

http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/upgrades.html

The name of the file you want is CDC_STD_UG.EXE. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file. If you don't have this program you can download it at Adobe’s website at http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/

Do you have any software update, DLL or program that would allow me to copy Mac CD’s?

No, most Mac CD's that you try to read on a PC will just show up as blank. This is not a problem with the CD-ROM drive, this is just an incompatibility between Mac and PC. Can you read these CD's with another CD-ROM on the same system? If you can, then they aren't Mac CD's they are Hybrid CD's.

I want to continue to write to my CD until it is full, but the software gives me errors. What do I do?

You need to disable bus mastering if you have it on your system. This is a known problem with IDE recorders. To find out if you have it and how to get rid of it, you will need to contact the maker of the computer. Make sure you don't have any lines in the config.sys or the autoexec.bat that refer to a CD-ROM. Try using one of the three recommended brands of media. They are TDK, Kodak, and Taiyo Yuden.

Why can’t I copy some of my video game CD-ROMs?

The software that we provided with the drive should allow you to make backup copies of your games unless they are copy protected.

How do I create CDs that can be read on a Mac?

The files have to be cross platform files but non-executable files. You also have to create the CD's in the ISO9660 format.

Is it possible to overburn a CD?

The writing software we support with our CD-R does not allow for burning over 650 MB to a CD.

CD-R/RW Drives Audio Recording Errors

What is causing the clipping noise on the audio CD’s I record?

See "How do I record audio from a CD?"

How do I record audio from a CD?

About Digital Audio Extraction

Copying audio digitally from a CD requires a CD-ROM drive or CD recorder which supports digital audio extraction (DAE).

All CD recorders can perform DAE. Many CD-ROM drives do not support DAE at all; others do it, but not very well. Few (if any) high speed CD-ROM drives can extract audio successfully at or even near their top-rated data speed.

Unsuccessful audio extraction is easy to detect: it sounds bad (clicks, pops, or hissing within the track). The most common reason is that DAE was performed at too high a speed for your source CD-ROM or CD recorder to maintain proper synchronization of the audio data it was passing to the hard disk or CD recorder. Audio samples are skipped or repeated, causing errors which sound to the human ear like clicks, pops, or hiss.

The solution is to slow down DAE. However, with some drives, getting a clean audio extraction requires reading at very slow speeds, with lots of going back and re-reading the same audio samples over again to make sure that everything is in the right place (this is called audio-resynching or jitter correction). Sometimes the read will be so slow that it becomes impossible to

copy directly from your source audio CD to the CD recorder - the read speed is slower than the recorder's write speed. In this case you will have to copy the audio tracks to hard disk and then record them back to CD.

For Best Results

If you hear pops, clicks, or hissing within a track, slow down! Here's how:

Easy CD Creator

Use the Audio Extraction Settings (available in Easy CD Creator versions 3.01 and later).

CD Spin Doctor

Slow down the read speed of the CD recorder or CD-ROM you are copying from:

1.When the drive is selected as the music source, its name appears below the Select Music Source button. Right-click on the name.

2.Select Properties.

3.Select the desired Current Read Speed from the drop-down menu.

I want to burn a CD of my MP3s, but I want to convert them into .WAV files? Where do I get the software?

Mitsumi currently does not bundle MP3 software with its CD-R drives. You may want to visit WinAmp’s website and download WinAmp software which has the ability to convert the MP3 into a WAV file. www.winamp.com/download/index.html

I want to extract audio from an audio CD to record a CD. Do I need a 32X CD-ROM?

You don’t need a 32X CD-ROM. You do need a CD-ROM as a source that supports Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) and does it well. It also needs to do it at a rate that will keep up with the writer so you don't get a buffer under run. The 32x does DAE well.

When I record an audio CD, the audio channels overlap, making it play too fast. What’s wrong?

Try using the CD-R as the source and destination to fix the audio problem. This means copying the audio source onto the hard drive and then placing blank CD-R media in the tray and recording from the hard drive to the CD-R. The software needs about 20 MB to close the disc so it can write the table of contents. This means you will only be able to write approximately 630 MB to a disc.

Why can’t I copy some of my audio CDs?

Quite a few companies fill their discs to the limit to copy protect them. When a CD-R copies a disc, it needs some room at the end to write the Table of Contents (TOC). Usually, the TOC requires from 10-30 MB or 1-3 minutes of audio. By filling the disc to the limit, this doesn't leave room for the writer to write the TOC and the software would tell you that the destination disc is too small.

How do I make copies of my Karaoke CD’s?

Mitsumi currently does not support the Karaoke CD format.

What's the serial number for CeQuadrat WinOn CD?  I need it to install the software.

The serial number for WinOn CD is printed on the CD-ROM face print.  Please write it down before installing.

Where can I find the CeQuadrat WinOnCD 3.6 manual?

The manual is on the CD-ROM.

Packet CD works fine but ToGo 4.5 gives me a lot of problems. Every time I try to record a CD it comes up with this message:

GRI: Write Blocks failed, Illegal mode for this track Block 0.

When I try to run ANY version of DirectCD in this computer it locks up when it starts to load into the taskbar. What do I need?

Make sure you don't have any lines in the config.sys or the autoexec.bat that refer to a CD-ROM. If you want, you can email me copies of these files and I will tell you what needs to be removed. Also, on some systems Direct-CD can cause the system to slow down. This is because packet writing is always checking the drive. It is always running in the background. Just to factor some things out, I would uninstall Direct CD and leave only the Easy CD Creator on the system. Then see if the performance is any better. Try using one of the three recommended brands of media as well. They are TDK, Kodak, and Taiyo Yuden.

Is it possible to use Adaptec DirectCD 1.01CS Software under Windows NT 4.0?

Can I use DirectCD version 2.5a with my CD-2801TE CD-R?

Only Direct CD version 1.01 is compatible with the CR-2801TE CD-R drive. Direct CD version 2.5 is compatible with the CR-4801TE CD-R drive.

Can I write Audio data and Video CD with DirectCD?

Does PacketCD work with WindowsNT?

PacketCD does not support the WindowsNT environment.

Does Mitsumi bundle any hard drive system backup software with its CD-R drives?

Mitsumi currently does not bundle such software.

Why are the version numbers of the Adaptec’s Easy CD Creator recording software different from the retail version?

Adaptec uses an OEM version for OEMs, which means when a company like Mitsumi purchases software to bundle with its drives they give it a different version number sometimes. This helps them tell whether it is a version that was purchased directly from them or if it is an OEM version. Most of the Direct CD upgrades, are not compatible with the Mitsumi CD-R's. If you look on the list of supported drives that Adaptec has on their site it will tell you that the latest version of Direct CD.

Where do I get software update patches for Adaptec’s DirectCD?

If you go to the following website, you can download the update patch file. http://www.adaptec.com/products/overview/cdrgrid.html

I bought a 4X write 8X read Mitsumi CD writer from Kodak. The software provided for the CD-R is CeQuadrat’s ToGo software. Where do I get technical support for this?

Please e-mail martint@kodak.com or doh@kodak.com.

I have CeQuadrat’s ToGo! Software and it can not recognize the audio CD tracks I am trying to copy. Is there some hardware configuration I need to do?

If you aren't able to write from CD to CD, the source drive isn’t transferring the audio fast enough. We know the CD-R is OK because when you write from the hard drive it works fine. You may have to keep doing things this way. You should not have anything running in the background when you are writing to a CD. Press Ctrl Alt Delete and end task on everything except Explorer, systray, and the writing software.

I have been having problems with my CD-R (2600TE) not being able to read certain blank CD’s. These are good quality (Maxell, Sony) CDs that I have been able to use in the past. What does Mitsumi recommend?
